Set against the backdrop of an upcoming reform bill decriminalising homosexuality, Hush explores the fragile relationship between a mother and a son in 1985 Wellington, New Zealand. Advertising copywriter, Donna has been approached by her boss David, to produce an AIDS awareness campaign associating the disease with gay men. Meanwhile, her son, Matt, is experiencing his own personal struggle; a realisation that he shares an attraction to Marcus, a boy in his close circle of friends. As both Donna and Matt tiptoe around one another’s secrets, they refrain from opening up to each other and are left speechless when their truths are finally thrust upon them.
